John turned his back on me to get dressed. I had to giggle

and I saw him trying not to blush.

I left my shirt untucked, flapping the fabric to send air on

to my stomach. „We should at least try to see the first land

merchant tonight,‟ I said, pulling on my socks. „If WiRgo!xu

and !Ci!ci-tel paid him a visit, you ought to be able to tell,

right?‟

Lafayette mumbled something, embarrassed that I was

even acknowledging his naked presence. I had a great view

of his naked presence, too, as he bent over to pull up his

trousers.

Oh God, he was going to pretend that it hadn‟t happened.

I pushed my hat down on my head. My hair was damp

„It‟ll be more difficult this time,‟ I said crossly. „I don‟t have

anything to bargain with. We‟ll know if they‟ve met the

People, but how can we get them to tell us how to find them?

Is there time to watch a house in case they come back, and if

so, which house? Jump in there any time, John.‟

He finished buttoning his shirt, and turned around at last,

sitting cross-legged on the mat. „I don‟t know,‟ he said.

„Perhaps you can bluff them, tell them that Nabu-zuqup-

kemu gave you information about them as well. Or perhaps

you can convince them of the importance of your mission.

Perhaps they will simply be friendly, and willing to help.‟

I hadn‟t heard him say so much at once since I first met

him. „You might be right,‟ I said, after I got over the shock

„By this time tomorrow, we‟ll have them, or my middle name

isn‟t Surprise.‟

Clarence couldn‟t blame the turtle for being ticked off. After

all, she had reported the bomb herself. But if God didn‟t

think the turtle had tried to kill itself, then why was she still

under suspicion? Suspicion of what?

Oh, thought Clarence, as he made his way up the beach

and towards Beni‟s house. The bomb had been a distraction,

something to keep God busy - and to blind its local sensors -

while the renegades switched on their Path. The turtle might

have planted and activated the device itself, or allowed it to

be planted, in order to help WiRgo!xu and !Ci!ci-tel get

away.

If that was so, it was facing a long life spent swimming

alone in the ocean. It must have owed them a hell of a

favour.

He had expected another Coping Team, but there were

only a couple of People hanging around outside the house - a

pair of forensic drones chatting with each other. To Clarence,

their high-speed communication was like an itch in the air.

For a moment he longed to be able to join in.

He walked up to them, and waited for them to finish their

conversation, which took another tenth of a second. „Hi,‟ he

said. „I was just visiting the turtle, and I wanted to see how

you were getting on.‟

„We‟d tell you,‟ said one drone, „but the island keeps

planting bugs.‟

„We‟ve destroyed three in the past day,‟ said the other

drone, and I don‟t mind it overhearing what a nuisance it is.‟

„We‟ve had to stick to encrypted direct communication.

Can we put you in the loop?‟

Clarence‟s wings drooped.
